Honoring Our Heroes: Jameis Winston Joins Meta and Lighthouse Guild in Supporting Blind Veterans

Veterans and event attendees smile together in seated and standing rows against a green wall. Many wear glasses and green lanyards; white canes and footballs are visible, and a blue shirt displays Lighthouse Guild and Meta logos.

NEW YORK — Veterans, accessibility leaders and New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston came together on October 30, 2026, for a Ray-Ban Meta glasses distribution and training event at Meta’s Hudson Yards offices in Manhattan, hosted by Meta in partnership with Lighthouse Guild. Even Though I’m Blind, Inc. was there to document the conversations, recognize the veterans in attendance and explore what this technology could mean in their daily lives.

The gathering connected a national commitment with individual experiences: veterans discussing their service, people learning about accessible technology, and leaders explaining why access must include practical support. Among those featured in ETIB’s coverage were Thomas A. Panek, President and CEO of Lighthouse Guild, and Maxine Williams, Meta’s Vice President of Accessibility and Engagement.

Jameis Winston brings his support to the veterans

Winston’s participation brought the worlds of professional sports and accessibility into the same room. In remarks captured by ETIB, the Giants quarterback expressed gratitude to veterans for their service and sacrifice, speaking about a responsibility that reaches beyond the football field.

He reflected on having played in large stadiums while recognizing the different significance of representing one’s country through military service. His message kept the focus on the veterans being honored and the value of organizations working together to support them.

Cazerny Bussey, Founder and CEO of Even Though I’m Blind, Inc., also connected with Winston during the event. Their exchange added a moment of New York football energy to coverage centered on community, service and opportunity.

Thomas Panek: technology with a personal connection

Thomas A. Panek leads Lighthouse Guild with professional experience and a personal understanding of blindness. His perspective at the event connected the possibilities of AI glasses with the everyday experiences of people living with vision loss.

In ETIB’s recorded coverage, Panek spoke about how the glasses have affected his own life and the experiences of people Lighthouse Guild has been meeting. He acknowledged Meta’s commitment to blind veterans and the importance of the partnership. His remarks also brought humor and personality into a conversation about tools that can provide additional information and choice.

The event’s emphasis on training was significant. Lighthouse Guild’s invitation described individual assistance with pairing the glasses to a smartphone, exploring their features and getting comfortable using them, along with additional classes after the event. Distribution was paired with an opportunity to learn.

A national commitment, with support close to home

The New York gathering was part of a broader initiative. In its June 12, 2026 announcement, Meta committed to donating Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to every blind veteran in America. The company identified more than 130,000 legally blind American veterans as eligible and named the Blinded Veterans Association and other organizations, including Lighthouse Guild, among its partners.

Meta’s announcement also identified hands-on guidance, training materials and partner-led support as elements of the effort. The October 30 event listing described a free distribution and training opportunity for blind and low-vision U.S. military veterans in New York City.

What the glasses can mean in everyday life

The practical possibilities were a recurring theme in ETIB’s conversations: reading a menu or document, getting information about an object, hearing a description of surroundings and using hands-free features while managing other tasks. These are everyday activities with direct consequences for convenience, confidence and participation.

Williams’ remarks, captured in ETIB’s coverage, placed those possibilities in a wider accessibility conversation. She discussed listening to people with different disabilities and exploring how wearable technology could support greater independence and quality of life.

For the veterans speaking with Cazerny, the conversation remained personal. They shared experiences of military service and considered how the glasses might fit into their routines. One participant discussed using the technology when an assistant was unavailable; another spoke about looking forward to having prescription lenses fitted. Their accounts showed why there is no single way to experience blindness or use an accessibility tool.

Keeping veterans’ voices at the center

For Even Though I’m Blind, covering this gathering meant documenting the people as well as the technology. The interviews, remarks and applause captured veterans being recognized for their service while discussing their own needs and expectations.

Accessible technology has the strongest foundation when people can help shape the conversation, ask questions and receive support in using the tools available to them. This event brought those elements together through a partnership between technology providers, community organizations and the veterans themselves.
